Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Shri Venkateshwara University, Periyar University debarred from offering online programmes: UGC
Uncategorized | March 21, 2024In a public notice, the regulator stated that Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Maharashtra, Sri Venkateshwara University, Andhra Pradesh and Periyar University Tamil Nadu have been debarred from offering ODL/ online programmes.
India’s online education space is experiencing a boom. Driven by a growing internet population and a vast education system, the market is projected for significant growth. This surge is fueled by a mix of factors, including the pandemic-induced rise of remote learning and the increasing demand for accessible, quality education. With a large user base and plenty of room for development, India’s online education space is set to be a major player in the global EdTech market.
Many prestigious Indian universities are now jumping into the online education arena. This includes established institutions like Amity University, Chitkara University and Manipal University, offering online versions of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Business Administration, Commerce, Computer Applications, and even specialized fields like AI and Data Science. This trend caters to a wider range of students seeking flexibility and established credentials. The online programs offered by these universities are recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), adding another layer of trust and recognition for potential students.

Students wishing to enrol in courses given through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and/or Online Learning (OL) mode were forewarned by UGC on Wednesday, ahead of the 2024–25 academic year. The regulator announced in a public notice that Periyar University in Tamil Nadu, Sri Venkateshwara University in Andhra Pradesh, and Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies in Maharashtra would no longer be able to offer ODL or online programmes. The UGC stated, “Students must confirm the recognition status of HEI for offering ODL and Online education for the session opted for admissic on UGC DEB website, check the details on the HEls’ website, take no of prohibited programmes and prohibition of franchising arrangement and ensure that all activities are being conducted within Territorial Jurisdiction for ODL programmes.”
Students have the option to pursue online programs from other UGC recognised universities including Amity University, Chitkara University, IIM Raipur, Symbiosis University among others.
